Specifications for Portugal
When you pick up your buy-to-let car in Portugal, you must first complete a document that allows you to circulate on Portuguese territory for a maximum of 90 days per calendar year. This document, known as the 'Guia de Circulação', will be sent to you at the same time as the order form.
It is essential that you scrupulously respect this 90-day period, as exceeding it will place you in an irregular situation, exposing you to severe penalties, up to and including seizure of the vehicle. In such a case, you will be personally liable for all costs arising from the confiscation of the vehicle by the authorities.
Let's illustrate this with a concrete example: for a 175-day contract with delivery to Porto on January 1 and return to Lyon on June 25. Until March 31, when the "Guia de Circulação" expires, you are free to enter and leave Portugal without restriction. Beyond this date, any movement, even for the simple return of the vehicle, constitutes a serious offence.
In the opposite case, i.e. 175 days with delivery in Lyon and return in Porto, as soon as you enter Portugal, you have a maximum of 10 days to apply for the "Guia de Circulação". Once you've obtained it, you'll be able to travel freely for 90 days. Failure to do so is also a serious offence.
