International driver's license (IDL)
Before heading off your European adventure, do some research about your driver's license. Some countries accept Canadian licenses, but most require an international driver's license (IDL).
The IDL is a legal ID that:
- Complements your Canadian driver's license;
- Offers information relating to your Canadian driver's license in 11 languages;
- Can be issued only if you have held a valid driver's license;
- You must present your valid Canadian driver's license and 2 passport photos when making the request;
- Is valid one year from the date of issue;
- Can only be issued through the CAA, the only Canadian authority allowed to issue an IDL.
